Radical Innovation: Segment 2: Elevate From Ground-Up: Resilience, Experience, and Alternative Learning
Part 2: Online Learning and Networking: Your Ladder to Leadership
In today’s fast-paced business world, the roads to joining the leadership team can be varied and while the main highway still runs through the hallowed halls of universities, there are backroads and alternate routes worth exploring. Rising through the ranks certainly requires skilling up along the way, however, there are other powerful, flexible options at your fingertips: online learning platforms. These platforms are a treasure chest of knowledge and skills, waiting for you to unlock and rise as an aspiring leader.
Broadening Horizons with Online Education
Education is no longer confined to the four walls of a classroom or the pages of a textbook. The digital age has revolutionized learning, making it more accessible, versatile, and in tune with your personal and professional life. It’s a thrilling time to be an aspiring executive, with a multitude of learning resources at your disposal.

Expansive Learning Platforms
Beyond Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and Udemy, the internet is awash with platforms designed to enhance your skillset and knowledge. Platforms like edX and Khan Academy are fantastic resources, offering courses from universities like Harvard and MIT, often at no cost. They cover a wide array of subjects that are pivotal in today’s business landscape, from data analysis to leadership psychology.
But it's not just these large platforms that can be your learning allies. Smaller, niche sites are often rich with specialized knowledge. For example, Codecademy can turn you into a coding whizz, which is a significant plus in the digital-centric business world, while platforms like General Assembly provide in-depth, skill-based courses that can give you a competitive edge.
Podcasts: Learning on the Go

Podcasts have emerged as a powerful learning tool for busy professionals. They turn your commute, workout, or evening stroll into a classroom. With podcasts, you can absorb insights from business leaders, economists, and successful entrepreneurs who share their journeys and tips for success. ‘Inside the Strategy Room’ by McKinsey and Company, ‘The Tim Ferriss Show’, and ‘Me, Myself, and AI’ are some of my top choices, offering stories that inspire and inform my workday.
Unlock Leadership Wisdom with a Click: Leadership Audiobooks on Audible
Finding time to sit down with a good book can be a challenge, especially for those climbing the career ladder. But what if you could absorb the wisdom of the world's most successful leaders while on the move? Audible makes this possible.

Take "Creativity, Inc." by Ed Catmull, for instance. It's not just a book; it's an expedition through the birth and growth of Pixar, offering invaluable insights into fostering a creative culture. Or consider "The Ride of a Lifetime" by Robert Iger, which is like a master class in leadership from one of the most successful CEOs in the entertainment industry. These books are more than stories; they are blueprints of innovation, perseverance, and smart decision-making. These books often leave me with big, important questions.
After reading Creativty Inc. I was left with the realization that leadership might require significant shifts in style and delivery depending on the team I was overseeing. This book had a huge impact on me at a time when I was new to management and working hard to succeed at managing a group of people, most of whom were new to structured employment.
Bob Iger is probably one of my all-time biggest inspirations. Bob rose from the production room at ABC to CEO of the Walt Disney Company a multi-national empire. His stories are both human and profound. The day they opened the biggest endeavor of his career ‘Disneyland Shanghai’ an alligator dragged a 2-year-old toddler to his death in a small lake on one of Disney World Orlando’s hotel properties. Talk about challenges! Bob often inspires me to ask myself: What is the difference between the CEO of a company that employs 40 people and the CEO at the helm of a company like Disney or Microsoft?
With Audible, these leadership treasures become part of your daily routine. You can dive into the minds of great leaders and innovators, gleaning lessons that can shape your own path to success. Each audiobook is an opportunity to transform ordinary moments into sessions of profound learning and inspiration.
Universities Entering the Digital Space
Top-tier universities are not standing on the sidelines of this digital education revolution. Through platforms like Coursera and edX, institutions such as Stanford and Yale offer a range of online classes, some leading to professional certificates or even degrees. They blend academic rigor with the flexibility of online learning, making them perfect for professionals eager to expand their credentials. Purdue University which is right in my backyard now offers Purdue Global a completely online experience.

YouTube: A Vast Resource of Knowledge
YouTube is another powerful tool in your learning arsenal. It’s a goldmine of tutorials, lectures, and educational channels. Whether it’s TED Talks for a dose of inspiration or channels like CrashCourse for a quick lesson on a complex topic, YouTube has content that can cater to every learning style and need.
Interactive Learning with Virtual Classrooms
Platforms like Zoom and Google Classroom have also opened doors to interactive and collaborative learning experiences. Live webinars and workshops provide the opportunity for real-time engagement with instructors and peers, closely mimicking the traditional classroom experience without the constraints of location.
Tailor Your Education to Your Ambition
The beauty of these online learning platforms is the power they give you to tailor your education to your specific career goals. They provide a broad spectrum of learning experiences, from passive listening to active participation, from free videos to structured university courses.
By leveraging these diverse platforms, you’re not just gaining knowledge; you’re also showing initiative and a willingness to invest in your professional development—qualities that are invaluable in an executive role.
In the next parts of this series, we’ll explore how to transform the knowledge gained from these platforms into tangible career advancements and leadership opportunities. Stay tuned, and remember: in the world of learning, the digital sky is the limit.
The Power of Connections: Networking Online
Learning online isn’t just about gaining knowledge; it's also about connecting with people who can help you grow. Platforms like LinkedIn are more than just job-hunting sites; they’re networking goldmines. You can build a personal brand that showcases your unique skills and experiences. Share your successes, your projects, and even your learning milestones. This isn't about bragging; it's about letting the world see your professional journey. I can’t even begin to tell you how often I meet people and the first thing they say is ‘Jason, I follow you on LinkedIn, you have an awesome online presence, and I’d love to pick your brain on how you do that sometime.’ You can find the answer to that question in my blog post on personal branding.

These online connections can lead to opportunities that were once out of reach. You can chat with industry veterans, join groups related to your field, and even reach out to CEOs and thought leaders you admire. These are the folks who can open doors for you, offer advice, and maybe even mentor you as you climb up the career ladder.
A New Era for Aspiring Executives

This combination of online learning and networking is redefining how we prepare for executive roles. You're not just collecting certificates; you're building a portfolio of real skills. And you’re not just adding contacts; you're forming meaningful relationships with peers and mentors. Together, these tools give you a solid foundation that can impress any hiring manager or executive search committee.
Remember, the goal is not just to learn, but to transform that learning into action. When you apply what you've learned and connect with the right people, you're taking active steps toward leadership.
In Conclusion: Your Path, Your Pace, Your Potential
As you embrace this new era of learning and networking, keep in mind that every course completed, and every connection made, is a step towards your goal. The world of business is changing, and the traditional path to the top is no longer the only way. By harnessing the power of online platforms, you're not just following in the footsteps of others; you’re carving out your unique path to executive leadership.
